Stan Sakai is best known for his ronin rabbit creation Usagi Yojimbo — and with his variant for Marvel Comics‘ “Rocket Raccoon” #2, Sakai adds another comic book action animal to his resume. A rare collaboration between the acclaimed creator and Marvel, Sakai’s variant cover depicts Rocket quite literally blasting through pack of dinosaurs — all in the award-winning cartoonist’s signature style.
While it’s uncommon for Sakai to work on properties outside of his own creations, this is not his first Marvel work; he lettered the “Amazing Spider-Man” newspaper strip for years, as well as many issues Sergio Aragones’ “Groo the Wanderer,” and contributed the “Oni 鬼” story to the publisher’s “Strange Tales” series in 2009.
Written and drawn by Skottie Young, “Rocket Raccoon” is the character’s first ongoing series, debuting in July.
“We’ve got this weird raccoon character with a lot of attitude and I feel like it’s a good opportunity outside of the main ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ book to dig around in the Marvel Cosmic attic and really find some strange and odd characters that might not have a place in a book with a more ‘heavy’ look at things and play around with them in this book,” Young told CBR in February. “I think Rocket can have a lot of fun with some pretty odd cosmic aliens.”
