In an interview with CBR’s Kiel Phegley, Archie Comics Co-CEO Jon Goldwater exclusively revealed that Archie and the Riverdale gang will make a return to animation for the first time in over a decade.
“‘Sabrina’ debuts this fall in animation on The Hub. I think it’s coming in late September. And there will be Archie animation coming, as well as the “Archie” movie,” Goldwater told CBR. “We haven’t announced the Archie animation yet, so maybe I shouldn’t have said anything, but it is coming, so what the heck. I just said it! [Laughter]”
Archie’s last major animated appearance was in the 1977 series “The New Archie and Sabrina Hour,” which rebroadcasted segments from the original “The Archie Show” 1963 series. Cartoon versions of the characters surfaced here and there over the years, last appearing for a single season 1999’s “Archie’s Weird Mysteries.” Archie Comics bringing the gang back to animation is a logical next step — after all, the company recently announced live-action “Archie” movie with a script by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. A television show seems likely for the project considering Archie’s current relationship with The Hub for the “Sabrina” animated series, but even with the live-action movie on the way, an animated feature isn’t out of the question. The publisher could even go the route of direct-to-DVD release features like DC Comics’ animated films.
Regardless of the format, Archie’s coming back to animation, which is great news for Archie fans everywhere.
