DC Comics has provided CBR News with an exclusive first look at Doug Mahnke's variant cover for "Flashpoint: Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown" #3. The series, written by Jeff Lemire, follows the adventures of the Grant Morrison version of Frankenstein's monster as he leads a team of a mix of the classic Creature Commandoes and new characters in the reality created by "Flashpoint's" main bad guy, Reverse Flash.

In an interview with CBR, Lemire compared his gig on this title with writing "Superboy" saying, "I've always kind of preferred DC's C and D-list characters. I just find them so interesting. That's why I loved the original "Crisis." I loved the Superman and Wonder Woman stuff going on, but it was just seeing all of these crazy characters in the background. It was like, "Who are they?" You wanted to know more about them. That's kind of the fun of doing this now. I get to answer those questions, like, "This is who they are" and develop them myself. Put my stamp on them. It's a lot more fun writing Frankenstein, in some ways, than writing Superboy, because Superboy has so much history."

Lemire plans to add to the history of Frankenstein's monster himself, however, as he's been tapped to continue scripting the creature's exploits in the post-Flashpoint, DC Relaunch title "Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E."

The second issue of "" hits stores tomorrow, July 13.
