EXCL: Gotham’s Tweedledee & Dum Debut in Mad Hatter Featurette

The Mad Hatter (aka Jervis Tetch) is coming to “Gotham,” and CBR has your best look to date at the man behind the haberdashery — and the first look anywhere at his minions, Tweedledee and Tweedledum — in an exclusive video featurette.

“The best way to describe him is, part child, part psychopath,” explains Benedict Samuel, who has been tasked with bringing mind-controlling Batman villain to life. “There’s an innocence to him and there’s also a very, very scary, dark person.”

“I’m really excited about our primary villain in season three,” series star Ben McKenzie says of the Batman bad guy’s live action debut. “Mad Hatter is an iconic DC villain, and one that allows us to explore the psychological villainy of characters like the Joker, but in a new dynamic way.”

While Samuel’s take does include the mind control the character exhibits in the comics, this version to Tetch uses a powerful hypnosis to sway his targets rather than the high-tech approach of his comic book counterpart. He has the ability to discern his target’s innermost desires, and twists them in a way that plays to his own advantage, forwarding his personal goals.

The Mad Hatter’s Alice, portrayed by Naian Gonzales is also introduced in the featurette. Here, Alice is Tetch’s sister, rather the object of his affection as she was in the comics. She’s also got special powers in the form of a virus she carries in her blood. While the virus does not affect her, anyone exposed to Alice’s blood becomes violently insane, a reaction the Mad Hatter is attempting to use and control to his own benefit.

The video also shares the first look at two other classic Bat-villains, as Tweedledee and Tweedledum are shown as the Mad Hatter’s henchmen.

Debuting in 1948’s “Batman” #49, Dr. Jervis Tetch has plagued Batman for decades. Adopting the Alice in Wonderland-themed identity of the Mad Hatter (he hid his technology in the oversized hat), Tetch has used his scientific knowledge to plague the Dark Knight. Though he was originally depicted as a humorous villain by creators Bill Finger and Lew Schwartz, the character has evolved into a darker bad guy over the decades.

Starring Ben McKenzie as Detective Jim Gordon, “Gotham” airs Mondays at 8 pm ET/PT on Fox. The series also stars David Mazouz as young Bruce Wayne, Camren Bicondova as young Selina Kyle, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, Morena Baccarin as Leslie Thompkins, Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney and more.

Benedict Samuel’s Mad Hatter debuts tonight, in an episode titled “Look into my Eyes.”
