A new trailer has arrived for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" that fills in some of the blanks of the movie's plot, including the personal stakes for Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso, and the meaning behind the name "Rogue One."

Arguably the best promo yet for the "Star Wars" standalone film, the trailer offers plenty for franchise fans to chew on, from action scenes to new details about Mads Mikkelsen's role as Galen Erso to a callback to "A New Hope." Oh, and we get another glimpse of Darth Vader.

While we've seen plenty already about "Rogue One's" tone and setting, this trailer is all about the story and emotional heart, as we're shown a galaxy in the iron grip of the Empire, and the very personal toll its rule has taken on Jyn and her family.

Directed by Gareth Edwards ("Monsters," "Godzilla"), "Rogue One" is set just before the events of "Star Wars: A New Hope," as a group of unlikely heroes undertakes a dangerous mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Galactic Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction.

Arriving in theaters Dec. 16, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.
