"Mad Men" alum Elisabeth Moss has joined Hulu's television adaptation of Margret Atwood's classic novel "The Handmaid's Tale." According to The Hollywood Reporter, she will star as Offred, the book's narrator and protagonist.

Set to run for 10 episodes, "The Haidmaid's Tale" takes place in the not-so-distant future. Moss' Offred lives in Gilead, a totalitarian society that views women as property of the state. Due to environmental disaster, Gilead -- once a part of the United States -- suffers from a declining birthrate, and fertile women like Offred are forced into sexual servitude in order to repopulate humankind. The series will follow Offred as she attempts not only to survive, but find her missing daughter.

"The 100" screenwriter Bruce Miller will pen the adaptation, which recently received a straight-to-series order. Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears and Warren Littlefield will executive produce, with Atwood attached as consulting producer.

"The Handmaid's Tale" will bow on an unspecified date in 2017.
