A new rumor suggests Netflix may be preparing to adapt yet another popular gaming franchise for television: Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls series.

As reported by ComicBook.com, this rumor comes from scooper Daniel Richtman, aka DanielRPK, on his Patreon. At present, there is no official confirmation from either Bethesda or Netflix. However, Richtman does have a fairly reliable track record with industry rumors.

Following the success of The Witcher, Netflix has proven itself capable of adapting existing pieces of popular media. On the other hand, while the adventures of Geralt of Rivia were the focus of the Witcher video games, Netflix's series actually adapts the original novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. By contrast, an Elder Scrolls series would primarily be a game-based adaptation.

Bethesda began its flagship series of role-playing video games in 1994 with The Elder Scrolls: Arena. The studio has since gone on to develop and publish four more mainline entries -- Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim -- as well as a number of spinoffs, such as the MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online. In other words, there is a surplus of lore and content available as references for any adaptations. However, as each entry in the series takes place many years apart across the continent of Tamriel, the possibility for a completely original story also exists.

This rumor's suggestion that Netflix would be the one to develop an Elder Scrolls series is also interesting, as another popular Bethesda property -- Fallout -- has a TV adaptation in development over at Amazon. Still, this previous example of Bethesda's willingness to see their games turned into shows does support the possibility The Elder Scrolls getting a similar treatment. The timing also has the potential to be advantageous. A few years, Bethesda officially announced The Elder Scrolls VI, though revealed the game's release was still a long way off, as it would not come out until after the studio's next title, Starfield. This could allow a potential TV series to prolong its relevance.

While Richtman has a proven record of disclosing reliable rumors in advance, it is still advisable to be cautious and await official statements from either Bethesda or Netflix. At the very least, Netflix's potential involvement could be cause for excitement if it are able to recapture the scale of The Witcher. The streaming service is also responsible for other game adaptations with its Castlevania animated series, as well as the announced live-action Assassin's Creed.
