Writer/director Edgar Wright returns after 2013’s “The World’s End” with the first trailer for the long-discussed action-comedy “Baby Driver.”
Following its world premiere Saturday at the South by Southwest Film Festival, it was summed up by CBR’s own Kristy Puchko as “‘Drive’ + ‘La La Land’ – pretension.” That, and Wright’s filmography (“Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” etc.), gives you a pretty good idea of what you’re in store for before you even watch the trailer.
Ansel Elgort (“The Fault in Our Stars”) stars as Baby, a music-obsessed getaway driver with tinnitus who relies on the beat of his own soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James of “Cinderella”), Baby is ready to ditch his fast-faced criminal life. But when he’s coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a heist gone wrong threatens his life and freedom.
Racing into theaters Aug. 11, “Baby Driver” also stars Jon Bernthal, Eiza González, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Sky Ferreira and Flea.
