The cast of The CW's "Flash" pilot continues to grow, with "Ed" star Tom Cavanagh the latest actor to sign onto the DC Comics adaptation, Deadline reports.

Cavanagh will play Harrison Wells, the scientist behind S.T.A.R. Labs' Particle Accelerator, the machine responsible for Barry Allen's (Grant Gustin) transformation into the super-fast superhero. Shunned following the lab's explosion, Wells attempts to redeem himself when he learns his failed experiments have resulted in the creation of the Flash.

Grant Gustin's "Flash" Will Survive Even If Series Fails

Unlike previous additions to the cast, Wells is a character created specifically for the show, rather than one taken from the comics. Cavanagh joins Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, "Law & Order" veteran Jesse L. Martin as Detective West, Candice Patton as Iris West and Carlos Valdes as Vibe.

Written by DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and "Arrow" executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, the "Flash" pilot will be directed by television veteran David Nutter ("Arrow," "Game of Thrones"). The project received a pilot order from The CW alongside fellow DC Comics adaptation "iZombie."
