ECCC 2008: Con Wrap-Up and Photo Parade

by  in Comic News Comment

America’s biggest Northwest comic book convention got even bigger this year as the Emerald City ComiCon stretched its legs in its new venue at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in Seattle. CBR News braved the gray skies that made an appearance over the weekend to bring you all the news from this event. We covered several panels, visited lots of comics creators, studios and publishers, and we dared to cross paths with more than a few Stormtroopers.

ECCC Organizer Jim Demonakos said he was “super-thrilled” with the weekend. While it was still too early on Sunday to state the number of tickets sold, Demonakos said that attendance “far exceeded expectations.” So much so, as a matter of fact, that he was pleased to announce the Emerrald City ComiCon will be taking place in the same location next year and will expand into another 15,000 square feet of the Trade Center. Demonakos added that the dates are already set for April 4-5, 2009, and the ECCC already has a formidable guest list scheduled.

Some present at ECCC noted that there seemed to be fewer fans on Sunday, which fell on Mother’s Day this year. However, Demonakos said the dip was expected and he and his staff made sure to plan events to celebrate the holiday, including a Make Mother’s Day Cards With Comic Artists session for young attendees.

Overall, the ECCC appeared to please fans, creators, and publishers alike. More than one person commented to this reporter that they enjoyed this con because “It’s all about the comics.”
