Dynamite Entertainment is no longer moving forward with its planned variant cover campaign for Vengeance of Vampirella #1 that featured Vampirella and Red Sonja fighting over Cecil, a character created by the ComicsGate figure of the same name.

"In speaking with Cecil, neither one of us realized the cover would be so polarizing. We discussed and are not moving forward with the cover or the campaign," Dynamite Publisher and CEO Nick Barrucci said in a statement. On Indiegogo.com, the project is listed as "suspended" and bears a similar message that reads, "We've discussed with Cecil and we are no longer moving forward with the campaign. All current orders will be cancelled and refunded as soon as possible. We thank everyone for your support!"

Dynamite came under fire from the comic book community for its affiliation with Cecil and other members of ComicsGate, a movement in the industry that is widely considered a hate group and has organized targeted harassment campaigns against marginalized individuals. Ethan Van Sciver, who's seen by many as the leader of the group, describes it as "a consumer-led revolt against what is clearly a left-wing dominance in the comic book industry" and "a response to a culture war."

In response to the now-canceled variant cover, Mark Russell -- the current writer of Red Sonja -- announced he would no longer work with the publisher after his contract ended. "As I write this, I am finishing work on Red Sonja #24, which concludes my contractual obligations to Dynamite Comics," Russell wrote on Twitter. "After which, I will no longer be accepting any further work from Dynamite for as long as they continue any affiliation whatsoever with Comicsgate [sic]." He described ComicsGate as "a hate group with a long history of harassment, particularly of women and LGBTQ creators."
