When it comes to iconic, buff characters who spend a good deal of their time wearing loincloths and going on epic journeys, you can’t get much more old-school than Hercules. And when it comes to portraying them on the big screen, perhaps nobody’s better suited than Dwayne Johnson. Now, those who have been eager to see the WWE champion turned action hero bring the demi-god to life have a specific date to circle on their calendars.
Paramount Pictures and MGM have set Aug. 8, 2014 for the release of Brett Ratner’s Hercules, based on the 2008 Radical Publishing miniseries by Steve Moore and Admira Wijaya. The story follows the Greek hero and his six battle-worn companions as they’re called upon by the Thracian king to train his army. But in Thrace Hercules and his band of lost souls discover how far they’ve fallen and what it will take to travel the path to redemption. The comic has a different tone than, say, Clash of the Titans, as it’s set in a world where the supernatural doesn’t exist.
