Dwayne Johnson wants to do more than just play an onscreen action hero: he wants to create one.
TNT announced it has picked up a new reality competition show that Johnson will star in and executive produce. Using the working title The Hero, the series will follow 10 “ordinary people” who are brought to live in a house together and assigned missions that will test “their brains, their brawn and even their morality.” The final person left standing will be labeled that season’s “true hero.”
Johnson will be the contestants’ “mentor and motivator” as he guides them through the show’s various stages. His partner Dany Garcia will also produce the project, which is set to premiere in summer 2013.
“Dany and I couldn’t be more excited to enter into our first official foray in TV production,” Johnson said in a statement. “The Hero speaks to everything I believe in when it comes to challenging ourselves, to becoming better people every day and to making the right choices while growing from the wrong ones. Bridging the digital and physical world on the small screen in a way that’s never been done before will enable fans to use social media and on-screen decision making to determine the fate of the show’s contestants, and our goal is to make each TV moment impactful and exciting.”
Between this and his film slate, Johnson is certainly keeping himself busy. G.I. Joe: Retaliation is currently in reshoots for a release next year, and Johnson is busy shooting The Fast and the Furious 6. After that, Johnson is slated to star in the action thriller Ciudad.
