The rivalry between Black Adam and Shazam is a classic one, but it sounds like moviegoers won’t be seeing Dwayne Johnson’s version of Black Adam go up against his archrival when the Shazam film hits theaters in 2019. Johnson’s anti-hero version of Black Adam will be well-represented in a solo film that’s set to play off the Shazam movie, but the two won’t meet in the latter film. The news comes from DC Comic’s President and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns at Comic-Con International in San Diego.

“We haven’t announced any casting yet,” Johns said in an interview with Yahoo Movies. “But Dwayne isn’t going to be in this movie. He’s still doing Black Adam, but he won’t be in Shazam!”

The exclusion of Black Adam from the Shazam film is an interesting choice. Shazam does have a variety of alternative villains to choose from, though. Some villains, like Dr. Sivana and any number of Egyptian deities, are far more likely to make an appearance in the solo film than, say, Captain Nazi (though the character has appeared briefly in episodes of Justice League Unlimited and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, so anything is possible).

Debuting sometime after 2018, The Shazam and Black Adam films are currently in production. Dwayne Johnson has been confirmed to play Black Adam in the Black Adam adaptation.
