If after watching "The Fate of the Furious" you're itching to see Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs share more screen time with Jason Statham's Decker Shaw, you're apparently not alone.

Deadline reports Universal Pictures is mulling a spinoff written by franchise veteran Chris Morgan that would reunite the unlikely duo. Variety adds that Charlize Theron's Cipher, introduced as the antagonist of "The Fate of the Furious," might also be in the mix. The concept is in the very early stages, and there is no script or a commitment from the key actors.

A potential spinoff starring Johnson's Diplomatic Security Services officer was teased nearly a year ago, but it's apparently been under consideration for much longer. But according to Variety, the onscreen chemistry between Statham and Johnson has fanned the studio's desire for such a project.

The thrust of the film, at least at this point is that Hobbs and Shaw would re-team to pursue Theron's Cipher, whose escape in "The Fate of the Furious" leaves an opening for the character's continued presence in the blockbuster series. Deadline suggests the spinoff could come screeching into theaters ahead of the next "Fast and the Furious" film.

Exactly when that might be is anybody's guess, as all three actors -- and Johnson in particular -- have jam-packed schedules.

The eighth installment of the franchise, "The Fate of the Furious" smashed box-office records last weekend when it opened with $532.5 million worldwide.

Directed by F. Gary Gray (“Straight Outta Compton”), “The Fate of the Furious” stars franchise veterans Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell, joined by newcomers Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood and Helen Mirren.
