Last week, Marvel released teasers announcing the creative teams on a number of its titles slated to be relaunched in November, giving readers hints at what’s to come for Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Deadpool, the Fantastic Four/FF, Captain America and a possible X-Men title involving the word “Legacy.”
Marvel has already confirmed Kieron Gillen and Greg Land’s “Iron Man,” and Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic’s “Thor: God of Thunder.” Yesterday, CBR had the first word with Mark Waid and Leinil Yu on their upcoming “Indestructible Hulk” launch.
Today, things get a little silly as IGN speaks with comedians-slash-comic writers Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan as well as series artist Tony Moore about their upcoming task of tackling the infamous Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool, starting with a mission that will lead to Mr. Wilson tackling zombified dead presidents at the behest of S.H.I.E.L.D.
“It’s an action/comedy, but I would say the DNA is in Big Trouble in Little China and Ghostbusters and those sorts of things where the stakes are high and these are real threats,” Duggan told IGN. “If Deadpool can’t get the job done, this country is done. There are big threats. And by the way, the way these Presidents are drawn – they’re very menacing.
“[H]opefully America is good and sick of politics. Hopefully you won’t mind seeing some of the former pillars of society and government come back with some very bad intentions.”
While ‘Pool’s new series is designed to be a fresh starting point for new readers, as with the rest of the Marvel NOW! relaunches, it builds upon what has come before, rewarding longtime fans of the character while welcoming new ones. “The runs that preceded us definitely laid the ground work for us, and we’re fans of it,” Duggan said. “In this, I feel like he’s still a nutbird.”
“[T]he voices in his head, you’ll see, are a little more organic,” Posehn adds. “There’s a reason for them – not that there wasn’t before, but in ours, he gets a head injury in the first book. Somebody talks to him, but it’s not his voice. How should I say this? One of the founding fathers comes in to help him. We don’t know in the beginning if he’s hallucinating or if it’s part of his break with sanity or if this guy is really with him.”
