EXCLUSIVE: IDW’s First Ducktales Story Details, New Covers Revealed

The original DuckTales cartoon was based on the Duck family comic books by Carl Barks, so it only makes sense that the new DuckTales cartoon would inspire a new ongoing comic book series. It’s arriving this September at IDW Publishing — following a #0 issue in July, a mere Duck blur away — and CBR has details on the book’s creative team, what to expect from the first issue and both covers for the debut installment.

DuckTales will be written by Joe Caramagna, with art from Luca Usai and Gianfranco Florio. Caramagna is known in the comics industry for his extensive work as a letterer, but he’s also got plenty of experience as a writer, specifically with all-ages material — writing multiple titles in Marvel’s adaptation of its Disney XD series, including Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble and Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man. Usai and Florio both have illustrated Disney’s comics published in Italy, which are primarily aimed at the European market. Caramagna and Florio are both also contributing to July’s #0 issue.

The first issue will feature two stories: “The Great Experiment of the Washing Machine” and “The Chilling Secret of the Lighthouse,” with the latter title especially feeling strongly reminiscent of old-school DuckTales. Both covers prominently feature Donald Duck, who was a guest star in the original DuckTales cartoon but will be a regular on the new series.

The comic book series recently got an endorsement on Twitter from DuckTales TV series Co-Producer, Writer, and Story Editor Frank Angones, who wrote, “I read a @JoeCaramagna DuckTales comics script today that may be one of my favorite DT stories period. These comics are gonna be FUN.”

There have been multiple DuckTales comic book series in the past, based on the original cartoon which ran in syndication from 1987 to 1990, but this is the first one since the six-issue series published by BOOM! Studios in 2011, during the period that company published licensed Disney comics. IDW’s series was announced this past April, along with a comic book series based on Disney Channel’s Tangled: The Series (which itself is based on the 2010 animated feature film Tangled).

The new DuckTales cartoon was announced earlier this week to debut Sept. 23 on Disney XD — along with the reveal of the opening sequence, which is a new version of the original, undeniably iconic theme song.

DuckTales #1 is scheduled for release 10 days before the TV debut on Sept. 13; solicitation text and covers by Marco Ghiglione follow below.
