Drawing Crazy Patterns – Avengers Falling for the Scarlet Witch

In this feature, I spotlight five scenes/moments from within comic book stories that fit under a specific theme (basically, stuff that happens frequently in comics). Here is an archive of all the patterns we’ve spotlighted so far.

This week, in honor of her film debut later this week, we look at five times Avengers fell for their teammate, the Scarlet Witch!

1. Hawkeye

Hawkeye was the first one to become enamored with Wanda, as seen in Avengers #25 (by Stan Lee, Don Heck and Dick Ayers)…

He eventually got over her and began dating Black Widow. When THAT relationship floundered, however, he began to think about Wanda again, as shown in Avengers #90 (by Roy Thomas and Sal Buscema)…

However, by the time he had the chance to make a move on her in Avengers #102 (by Thomas, Rich Buckler and Joe Sinnott), she had moved on…

2. Hercules

This is likely the least famous of the Scarlet Witch’s Avenger relationships, but it DID happen.

Soon after Hercules first showed up in the Avengers, in Avengers #40 (by Thomas, Don Heck and George Roussos) he, like all men do when they meet the Scarlet Witch, notices her beauty…

In Avengers #42 (by Thomas, John Buscema and Roussos), he asks Wanda out on a date…

They finally get their date in Avengers #46 (by Thomas, Buscema and Vince COlletta), where we also learn that Captain America and Roy Thomas share a love for J.R.R. Tolkein. That’s got to be a fun thing about writing a comic character, you can make them dig whatever you like…

Sadly, right after this, Scarlet Witch left the team for a stretch and by the time she returned, Hercules was off of the team. So it is a bit of a “What If…? although not much of one, of course, as it seems unlikely that Hercules would have settled down long term with ANYone.

3. The Vision

During the Scarlet Witch’s couple of years away from the team, the Vision joined the Avengers. When she and Quicksilver rejoined the team, they didn’t have a ton of interactions.

It was not until Avengers #80 (by Thomas, John Buscema and Tom Palmer) that the first hint of their future romance showed up…

Over the next ten issues, there really were not a whole lot of hints of feelings between the two, except I guess this bit in Avengers #90 (by Thomas and Sal Buscema) where the Vision notes his appreciation that Wanda was concerned for him…

But then the next issue blew things off the charts! In Avengers #91 (by Thomas and Sal Buscema), the Vision is injured while fighting off the Kree Sentry…

Later, he and Wanda are captives of Ronan the Accuser and their feelings for each other became evident…

Although next issue, (also by Thomas and Buscema) the feelings were walked back a bit…

But then Wanda was captured by the Skrulls, so when the Avengers went to outer space to rescue her and Captain Marvel, the Vision couldn’t hide his feelings…

and they came out in a violent fashion in Avengers #96 (by Thomas, Neal Adams and Tom Palmer)…

In Avengers #98 (by Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith), the Vision reflects on his love for Wanda when she is once again possibly in danger…

And in Avengers #99, we learn that Wanda loves the Vision…

The Vision talks over things with Jarvis…

Honestly, things keep up like this for quite a while, so I’m just going to skip ahead to Avengers #108 (by Steve Englehart and a bunch of different artists) where they finally get together (after Quicksilver has gone missing)…

They eventually marry.
