Nothing can bring quite as big a smile to my face as reading the words "Donald Glover to play Spider-Man." Sure, sure, it's voice work for a cartoon. However, the unlikelihood of this announcement struck me with the same amusement and bonhomie as hearing that, say, Community was going to be renewed for a sixth season.

Back when it was known that Sony would be rebooting the Spider-Man franchise with a new lead actor, Glover waged a very spirit campaign on social media to get his name into consideration. Which seemed like a long shot, because Peter Parker isn't ... you know ... a rap artist. Glover, though, does possess the attitude: nerdy and funny, but at the same time he can display the right amount of wounded melancholy (which was apparent during a particularly disturbing moment between his gigs at Community and Childish Gambino). The folks at Community played along, having him dress up in Spider-Man pajamas in one episode. He also caught the eye of one Brian Michael Bendis. Miles Morales in the Spider-Man of Ultimate comics was modeled, in part, on Donald Glover.

And now Glover has been cast to voice Miles Morales in Disney XD's Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors animated series. While not as high profile as Andrew Garfield's gig, it still represents an astounding step that, honestly, would have seemed impossible when Glover took to Twitter with the #Donald4Spiderman hashtag. Who knew that one actor's enthusiasm would have such big repercussions on the comics world? And, who knows? The day may still come when Glover, or some other lucky actor, gets the opportunity to don the web-patterned costume as Miles Morales in the next cycle of Spider-Man movies.
