Syfy's Dominion is ready to stake its claim this summer. The new series, based on the film Legion, depicts humanity fighting back against the lower angels who have devastated society. To pave the way for its June 19 premiere, the cable channel has released a new trailer, as well as a new poster that blends classic and modern elements.

Entertainment Weekly scored the first look at the image, which depicts an angel trying to stab a gun-wielding human, created in the style of classic Italian painter Guido Reni.

“I got the idea for the Dominion posters from thinking about how the show brings together something classical – angels – with something contemporary – Vegas,” said James Spence, senior vice president of creative at Syfy. “Much like Banksy when he subverted classical paintings. I thought it would be really compelling to subvert a classic image of an angel with a contemporary image of a gunfight (of which there are many in the show!). We worked with photographer Peter Lippmann to build up our image. Peter is a master of shooting images that look like they’ve been painted. The result is an image that at first glance appears like a renaissance image – the light, color and form of the image adheres to all the classic tropes – but on second glance it’s anything but.”

Dominion premieres June 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy.

Dominion is an epic supernatural drama set in the near future. Specifically, 25 years after "The Extinction War," when an army of lower angels, assembled by the archangel Gabriel, waged war against mankind. The archangel Michael, turning against his own kind, chose to side with humanity. Rising out of the ashes of this long battle are newly fortified cities which protect human survivors. At the center of the series is the city of Vega, a glistening empire that has formed from the ruins of what was once Las Vegas.
