Following earlier reports connecting him to the role, Dominic Cooper is now official as the lead in AMC's "Preacher" adaptation, playing main character Jesse Custer.

Seth Rogen, who developed the pilot with his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg, announced the news on Twitter: "We have Jesse Custer! @dominiccoop is gonna save our souls. #Preacher"

Deadline says the move comes following "lengthy negotiations." Cooper is already a veteran of comic book-based television, playing the recurring role of Howard Stark on "Marvel's Agent Carter." He was first reported to be the frontrunner for the role in March.

This move looks to round out the main cast, which also includes Ruth Negga as Jesse's ex-girlfriend Tulip, Joseph Gilgun as his vampire friend Cassidy, Ian Colletti as Arseface and Lucy Griffiths as Emily, a character created for the TV show.

AMC officially ordered a "Preacher" pilot, written by "Breaking Bad" veteran Sam Catlin and based on the acclaimed '90s Vertigo/DC Comics series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, last December.
