WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the latest episode of Doctor Who: Flux, "Chapter Six: The Vanquishers," which aired Sunday on BBC.

Ever since the start of Doctor Who: Flux, the Doctor has been on a desperate hunt for answers. After she learned that she was the Timeless Child and that countless previous regenerations had been erased from her memory, the Doctor went on a search for Division, a secretive Time Lord organization operating from the shadows. The Doctor found one member of the Division in the Lupar Karvanista, but he didn't offer any answers about the Doctor's past. Then, a brief trip back in her own timeline offered a glimpse at one of these past lives -- but it was far from the whole picture.

Now, in the Season 13 finale, "Chapter Six: The Vanquishers," the Doctor finally gets a hold of all her lost memories. However, she doesn't absorb them -- instead, she opts to hide them, deep within the TARDIS.

At the end of "Chapter Five: Survivors of the Flux," the Doctor was reunited with the woman who found the Timeless Child, her "mother," Tecteun. Not only did Teceteun reveal that she was behind the Flux and Division, but she also showed that she had a Fob Watch that contained all of the Doctor's lost memories. However, before she could get her hands on the watch, the Ravagers of Time returned and killed Tecteun. As the episode came to a close, Swarm and Azure had the Fob Watch, and they taunted the Doctor with it.

Now, in the season finale, the villainous brother and sister duo use the watch to torture the Doctor. They open the device and pull the Doctor in, showing her the twisted black and white house the Doctor previously saw in "Chapter Two: War of the Sontarans." This house, in truth, is a representation of her lost memories: a jumbled mess that is just out of her reach. Swarm and Azure play with the Doctor, using their powers to destroy the house and put it back together again, never letting the Doctor inside.

Thankfully, the Doctor's suffering is brought to an end when the Flux is contained and the Time entity reclaims Swarm and Azure. The entity leaves the Doctor with a warning of her coming end and, without her tormentors, she now has hold of the Fob Watch. After all this time spent searching, the Doctor finally has her memories in the grasp of her hand, all of the answers she has been looking for now within reach. Only, she doesn't open the watch to reclaim the memories that were taken from her. Instead, she drops the watch in the heart of the TARDIS, telling her ship to keep them where even she won't ever find them.

The Doctor's decision is surprising, but it also makes sense. These memories are intricately tied with the cataclysmic events of the season, and now that these threats have passed, the Doctor may see that there is no reason to dive deeper into this mystery. Opening the watch might be a Pandora's Box in and of itself, leading to more pain and dangerous secrets that are best kept secret for the time being.

However, in the season's final seconds, the Doctor does tell the TARDIS to give her the watch should she ask convincingly. This indicates that, sooner or later, the watch will come back into play, and the Doctor will reabsorb her memories. This is likely to take place in the next three specials, which will serve as Jodie Whittaker's final episodes. These episodes will most assuredly conclude the Timeless Child story arc, which could be resolved with the opening of the Fob Watch. But if the Doctor does that, there is no telling what she will unleash.

To find out if the Doctor will regain her memories, the Doctor Who holiday special airs Jan. 1 on BBC.
