Disney's "Big Hero 6" is among the nominees for the Academy Award for best animated picture, announced this morning in Beverly Hills. The superhero comedy faces competition from "The Boxtrolls," "How to Train Your Dragon 2," "Song of the Sea" and "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya."

Inspired by the Marvel comic by Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau (credited in the film as Man of Action), "Big Hero 6" has also racked up nominations for the Annie Awards, BAFTA and the Golden Globes (it lost out in the latter on Sunday to DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon 2").

Directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, the 3G-animated film has grossed more than $409 million worldwide. It remains No. 1 at the Japanese box office in its second weekend of release.
