Fans of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. need to thank parent company Disney for the show's upcoming fifth season, as ABC, the network the Marvel series airs on, reportedly wanted to cancel the show after Season 4.

According to Variety, the fifth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was green lit only after pressure came down on the network from Disney. The renewal happened late in the game by traditional television renewal standards, likely explaining why the show is slated to return early next year rather than this fall. When the series does kick off its fifth season, which arrives after Inhumans wraps its eight-episode run, it will take over the new Marvel series' Friday night time slot rather than returning to its traditional Tuesday night placement.
