Disney Eyes Tron Reboot With Jared Leto

Oscar winner Jared Leto is reportedly circling a reboot of Disney’s “Tron” franchise, characterized as in the very early stages of development.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there’s no writer or director attached, but “Tron: Legacy” co-producer Justin Springer is involved. If the project were to move forward, Leto and his partner Emma Ludbrook would also produce.

The studio had previously planned a sequel to 2010’s “Tron: Legacy,” itself a follow-up to the 1982 original, but shelved the project in 2015. Director Joseph Kosinski, who set set to return for the sequel, insisted just earlier this week that “Tron 3” isn’t dead, but rather in “cryogenic freeze.”

Citing unnamed sources, The Hollywood Reporter contends this new project isn’t a direct sequel to “Legacy” but instead “is being built out of the source code of the deleted ‘Tron 3’ script. Leto would play a new Ares, who had a key role in that script.

It’s unknown whether Kosinksi will return for the reboot. However, during the Q&A following a screening of “Tron: Legacy,” the director did offer details about the canceled “Tron 3.” Tentatively titled “Tron: Ascension,” the film would have seen elements from the digital world of Tron seeping into the real one, and focused on Olivia Wilde’s digital-human hybrid Quorra as she copes with life outside of a simulation. How much of that may find its way into the reboot, of course, remains to be seen.

Starring Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Michael Sheen and original “Tron” cast members Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, “Legacy” grossed more than $400 million worldwide.
