Disney to Preview “Big Hero 6” with Manga Series in Japan

In August, Disney plans to publish a serialized “Big Hero 6” manga in Japan — the first time a manga series has ever previewed one of the studio’s films. Reported by Anime News Network, the series — called “Baymax,” which is the film’s Japanese title — will be crafted by Haruki Ueno (“Phi Brain: Saigo no Puzzle”) and feature monthly installments in “Magazine Special.” No details were released about how long the series is planned to run.

The serialization of “Big Hero 6” into a manga, while unprecedented for Disney, really speaks volumes about how the film is marketed in Japan. While the recently-released “Big Hero 6” U.S. trailer features a lot of action and frenetic pacing, the Japanese trailer (posted by Comic Book Movie) is far more emotion-based, and really delves into Hiro Hamada’s motivations during the beginnings of “Big Hero 6,” as well as Baymax’s role as a friend and companion, rather than a mighty armored robot.

“Big Hero 6” releases November 7 in the United States and December 20 in Japan.
