Disney has begun to develop a live-action "Aladdin" prequel titled "Genies," which will take place in the Realm of Genies and tell the story of how Aladdin's Genie ended up in the lamp.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Damian Shannon and Mark Swift are already on board to pen the script, with Tripp Vinson producing. In the original "Aladdin" animated feature, Genie was played by the late Robin Williams, who improvised much of the dialogue for the beloved character.

"Genies" is early in development, but Disney hopes for the prequel to lead into a live-action "Aladdin" film. If so, "Aladdin" will join a growing number of other Disney animated films that have been adapted to live-action, including "Maleficient," "Cinderella" and "Beauty and the Beast."
