Disney has hired Linda Woolverton to pen the sequel to "Maleficent" and hopes that Angelina Jolie -- who played the character in the first film -- will return, Deadline reports.

A live-action, perspective-shifted re-telling of Disney classic "Sleeping Beauty," the first "Maleficent" film starred Angelina Jolie as the titular villain. With a cumulative box office total of $757.4 million, the movie was one of 2014's highest-grossing films. It is unknown whether Jolie plans to reprise the role in the sequel.

Woolverton has a long list of writing credits to her name, including several popular Disney films, like "The Lion King." She worked on the first "Maleficent" film and is currently working on Disney's live action adaptation of "Beauty and the Beast."
