Diego Luna has joined the cast of “Star Wars: Rogue One,” according to a report Wednesday from Variety. Disney and Lucasfilm declined comment on Variety’s report.
Variety states that Luna will play a lead role in the film, opposite Felicity Jones (already confirmed for the cast) and Riz Ahmed, who had been attached to the movie as of last month. Ben Mendelsohn, reported to be a part of the “Rogue One” cast since March, is potentially playing the film’s villain.
Born in Mexico City, Luna’s breakthrough was in 2001’s “Y Tu Mamá También,” directed by Alfonso Cuarón. He’s also appeared in “Open Range,” “The Terminal, “Elysium” and directed and produced last year’s “Cesar Chávez” biopic.
Directed by Gareth Edwards (of 2014’s “Godzilla”), “Star Wars: Rogue One” is the first of multiple planned “Anthology” films — set in the continuity of the Star Wars saga, but apart from the trilogies. “Star Wars: Rogue One” is scheduled for release on Dec. 16, 2016.
