Diamond Announces Plans for Comic-Con International

Official Press Release

Retailers won’t want to miss out on the special events, activities, and programs that Diamond Comic Distributors is planning for Comic-Con International: San Diego (July 17-20)!

Free Admission Friday: Retailers can obtain free admission to Comic-Con International for Friday, July 18 simply by contacting their Diamond Customer Service Representative no later than Wednesday, July 2. Interested retailers’ names will be put on a list that will be at the show’s Industry Registration desk. As many as two representatives per store may receive free admission.

Please Note: Free admission is offered for Friday only. Representatives of stores who are not the stores’ owners will require identification — such as a business card identifying their position with the store and/or a letter of introduction on store letterhead, signed by the owner — when they check in to receive badges for the day.

Convention Consignment Program: Diamond is offering retailers who will attend Comic-Con International an opportunity to purchase product on a consignment basis to sell at the show, return any unsold consignment quantities to Diamond, and pay only for those copies that have sold. For more details on how to participate in this program (which will also be made available to retailers attending Wizard World Chicago in August), retailers should contact Diamond Field Sales Representative Dave Hawksworth by phone at (800) 45-COMIC (ext. 322), or by e-mail at hdave@diamondcomics.com by July 1.

Exclusive Toys: Retailers can also purchase two exclusives – created for San Diego and Wizard World Chicago – before and during the show at the Diamond booth:

· Kaiyodo’s Gungrave Previews Exclusive Action Figure (MAR035045H, $9.99) re-creates Grave, the lead character from the eagerly awaited PlayStation 2 game Gungrave. The 4″-tall, highly detailed figure – designed by fan-favorite Trigun creator, Yasuhiro Nightow and imported from Japan – comes with an arsenal of accessories. Only 2,003 copies of this limited-edition figure will be made.

· The San Diego Comic-Con 2003 Minimates 2-Pack: Peter Parker & Mary Jane (APR035114H, $6.99) – a Diamond Select Toys & Collectibles release – includes two 2-1/2″-tall figures of one of comics’ most famous couples, with 14 points of articulation and character-appropriate accessories. Only 5,000 of these sets will be manufactured. The top 10 stores that pre-buy Diamond Select Toys & Collectibles’ San Diego Comic-Con 2003 Minimates 2-Pack: Peter Parker & Mary Jane (APR035114H, $6.99) will receive a free Special Edition DST Bust, plus a large sign outlining the program to use at their booths to attract consumers. (DST will also provide smaller, 8-1/2″ x 11″ signs for retailers to purchase and display.)

Additionally, retailers will receive a response card with each 2-pack on which they can stamp their booth information before selling them to consumers. When brought to the DST booth, these cards will be entered into live daily drawings for one of 12 rare Gold Spider-Man Marvel Minimates. Both the exclusive and the contest are being promoted in an ad running in ToyFare that will appear around the time of the Comic-Con, ensuring maximum consumer awareness — and salability — of these toys.

To order these exclusives, contact Diamond Sales Representative Toby Sluss by phone at (800) 45-COMIC (ext. 293), by fax at (410) 560-7148, or by e-mail at stoby@diamondcomics.com. Orders for these toys must be placed by July 7 for pick-up in San Diego, and must be picked up at the show by Friday, July 18. Delivery is not available.

Retailer Reception: DST will also host a reception for retailers and other industry professionals on Thursday night, July 17, at 8:00 p.m. in the Santa Rosa Room of the Hilton Gaslamp Hotel. Area retailers will receive their invitations with an upcoming product shipment. Retailers can also obtain them at the show from the Diamond or DST booths. Please Note: Retailers must present their invitations and their Comic-Con International badges to be admitted to the reception. The first 200 retailers attending will receive a goodie bag filled with exclusive items.

Watch for announcements of more Diamond-sponsored events and activities for retailers in future issues of Diamond Dateline, Diamond Dialogue, and Diamond Daily!
