Despite Sharp Drop-Off, “Suicide Squad” Opens With Record $135 Million

Following a steep 41 percent drop-off in ticket receipts between Friday and Saturday, “Suicide Squad” will finish the weekend with a $135.1 million debut.

That’s still massive for an August opening, and more than enough to shatter the previous record of $94.3 million, set in 2014 by Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy.” It also falls solidly within pre-release projections, but falls far short of the $147 million-plus expected following Friday’s $65 million haul.

The drop-off leads Variety to raise the specter of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which like “Suicide Squad” opened strong despite negative reviews only to be tripped up in its second weekend by bad word of mouth.

The Warner Bros. film was trailed at No. 2 by last weekend’s champion, Universal’s “Jason Bourne,” which fell 62 percent to $22 million (for a $103.4 million haul). “Bad Moms” was third with $14.2 million, followed by “The Secret Life of Pets,” which added $11.6 million to its coffers, bringing its domestic total to $319.6 million, and “Star Trek Beyond” (with $10.2 million; $127.9 million total).

Directed by David Ayer, “Suicide Squad” stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Karen Fukuhara, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne.
