Del Toro’s Pacfic Rim Set For July 2013, Mountains Still A Thing

What an emotional roller coaster this past year must have been for Guillermo del Toro. He left The Hobbit in June 2010, and not too long after settled into a long, long in-development passion project, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. Things seemed to be going great for a while, until that, too, fell through. Del Toro finally set his sights on Pacific Rim, a sci-fi action film featuring towering monsters, which Warner Bros. has now set for a July 12, 2013, release.

That said, del Toro still intends to scale those Mountains, as he revealed in a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times. “I’m not giving up,” he said. “Mountains of Madness has been with me for 13, 14 years and I really don’t want to give up on it … the way I plan to do it is a very peculiar take, and I think if I don’t stick with it the version I would like to see would never get made.”

Universal still apparently wants to make the movie happen and del Toro believes he can nab the asked-for PG-13 rating — which was the problem in the first place — since his script is free of big offenders like curse words and nudity. The plan is to take another crack after the sun sets on Pacific Rim, so here’s hoping.
