Many comics devotees have hoped for the introduction on Marvel's Netflix dramas of the Daughters of the Dragon, the dynamic duo of Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, virtually from the moment Simone Missick was cast on Luke Cage. That moved closer to reality last month with the announcement that the actress will join stars Finn Jones and Jessica Henwick in the second season of Iron Fist. However, it's The Defenders that actually paves the way for that fan-favorite team-up.

But first, a little background: Introduced separately in Marvel comics at the heights of the blaxploitation and kung-fu crazes of the 1970s, Colleen and Misty -- one a sword-wielding descendant of samurai, the other a no-nonsense ex-NYPD officer with a bionic arm -- soon crossed paths, becoming best friends in the process. The two established their own detective agency, Nightwing Restorations Ltd., and became popular supporting characters of Iron Fist and Luke Cage.

On first Netflix's Luke Cage and now on The Defenders, Misty is depicted as a rising star within the New York Police Department, which rewards her work in Harlem by broadening the scope of her responsibilities to include the entire city. In that role, Misty not only crosses paths with Luke and his newfound allies, including Colleen, she also once again places her career, and her life, on the line. On Luke Cage, that resulted in Misty being shot in the right arm by the villainous Diamondback, an injury many assumed would align with her comic book origins and, ultimately, the bionic arm.

However, when Misty returned on The Defenders, she was in good health and a foul mood. Only one of those would last.

In the finale of the miniseries, Misty prevents Colleen's mentor, the Hand leader Bakuto, from decapitating Claire Temple, only for her right arm to be severed in the process. (Don't worry, Colleen swiftly puts an end to the threat of Bakuto, once and for all.)

Following the defeat of the Hand, Misty awakes in a hospital to find a remorseful Colleen waiting at her bedside. "It's not your fault," Misty assures her. "It's the job." Luckily, Danny Rand owns the hospital, described by Colleen as "a state-of-the-art kind of place," suggesting Misty's new arm won't be just any prosthetic. "Maybe they can help," Colleen offers. "Get you back up and running."

In Marvel Comics lore, it was Tony Stark who provided Misty with the bionic arm to replace the one she lost after preventing a bomb attack. The original prosthesis was superhumanly strong, while the updated model can generate an anti-gravity repulsor field and emit a concentrated beam of cryogenic energy.

Colleen and Misty were first dubbed the Daughters of the Dragon early in their careers, in 1977, by Davos, who intended the moniker as a slight. Although the duo has appeared infrequently under that name, it has has nevertheless endured. And considering that Davos was positioned in Iron Fist's Season 1 finale as a likely villain in Season 2, there's a good chance that Misty's bionic arm and "the Daughters of the Dragon" will also appear.
