Behind the Scenes of the Creation of Deathlok

Knowledge Waits is a feature where I just share some bit of comic book history that interests me.

Rich Buckler sadly passed away recently. Despite a long career drawing for Marvel and DC Comics on a bunch of titles, Buckler is perhaps best known (and he seemed to be most proud of) his creation of Deathlok.

What’s interesting is that unlike most other characters, there was actually a whole lot written about Deathlok BEFORE he was created (and WHEN he was created), as Buckler came up with the idea, pitched it to Roy Thomas at Marvel Comics (when Thomas was at the tail end of his stint as Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief) and then developed the character with writer Doug Moench.

Marvel’s fan magazine, FOOM, had a “check out this new character, Deathlok!” feature in FOOM #5, with a fascinating piece by Moench about how he got in on the character with Buckler…

So Deathlok then debuted in Astonishing Tales #25. After his debut story, the comic then had an interview with Roy Thomas and Bucker and Moench where they discuss the creation of Deathlok…

Then, amusingly enough, there’s then a short story about the creation of Deathlok that posits, “What if Deathlok never was created?” THey JUST created the guy! The story was drawn by Buckler’s assistant at the time, some guy named George Perez who drew some comics on his own later on I think. I could be wrong.

Even if all he did was Deathlok (and he did a whole lot more than Deathlok), Buckler would have had a fine comic book legacy.

If anyone else has a cool piece of comic book history that they’d like to see featured, feel free to drop me a line at brianc@cbr.com!
