In Japan's live-action adaptation of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's popular manga series Death Note, demonic death god figure Ryuk was a largely CGI creation. In Netflix's American adaptation, however, it seems as though a slightly different technique may be applied. As part of a back-and-forth with the fictional Ryuk's Twitter account, director Adam Wingard recently posted a teaser image of the shinigami, who will be played by Spider-Man star Willem DaFoe.

The composite image, which seems to combine both drawn and photographed elements, hints that Ryuk's appearance will perhaps remain more faithful to the original manga and subsequent anime versions of the character, in stark contrast with the other live-action cast members. Of course, Ryuk could also look completely different in action, but we won't find out for certain until the series arrives on Netflix in August.

Arriving August 25 on Netflix, Wingard’s Death Note stars Nat Wolff as Light Turner, Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton, Keith Stanfield as “L,” Paul Nakauchi as Watari and Shea Whigham as James Turner.
