This weekend saw “Deadpool” finally abdicate the weekly box office thrown, as for the first time in four weeks, the film was not number one. Even though “Zootopia” and “London Has Fallen” both took in a bigger haul this week, 20th Century Fox/Marvel’s smash hit still managed a historic feat.
According to Box Office Mojo, “Deadpool” has officially entered the top 50 highest grossing domestic films off all time. The movie is expected to add $16.4 million by the end of Sunday, bringing its total domestic gross up to a staggering $311.16 million. That total places it at number 48 on the top 50 chart, pushing it past “Independence Day,” “Return of the Jedi,” and “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.”
No, the numbers aren’t adjusted for inflation. Even so, for an undervalued, R-rated superhero property to make such an explosive impact at the box office is without a doubt revolutionary. Worldwide, “Deadpool” sits at sits at 85th all time with its $673.2 million dollar gross, and is just under $60 million away from topping “American Sniper” and “Passion of the Christ” to become the highest grossing R-rated domestic movie ever.
Fox has already greenlit a sequel, which is expected to fill one of the studio’s two X-Men related spots over the next two years. The good money is on “Deadpool 2” (“Deadpool and Cable?”) arriving on January 12th, 2018, and “Gambit” taking the October 6th, 2017 slot.
