Deadpool is a big Wolverine fan, both in the comics and on the screen. In fact, in last year's Fox hit, Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson made a number of references to his shared-universe compatriot, going so far as to (painfully) attach a magazine cutout of Hugh Jackman to his face in one memorable scene. And while they may not be quite as rabid, many fans are certainly keen on the idea of the antiheroes appearing together in "Deadpool 2," despite Jackman's assertion that "Logan" is his final turn as Wolverine.

A reunion, then, would seem to be an impossibility, right? Maybe not if producers follow through on a clever twist pitched to screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese.

While promoting their sci-fi thriller "Life," the collaborators were presented by a writer for The Hollywood Reporter with the idea of Jackman appearing as himself in "Deadpool 2."

"Oh, my gosh, that's one we haven't heard. That's not a bad idea. I like that," Reese said. "Deadpool lives in a world where Hugh Jackman is out there. He's got the 'People's' Sexiest Man Alive cover that he staples to his forehead in the first movie, so maybe he could meet Hugh as Hugh. That would be really funny."

The writers also discussed the timeline for the sequel. "We're very close to a draft that we'll go off and shoot in a couple of months and we couldn't be more thrilled," Reese said. "We don't want to put the cart before the horse, and often times with release dates that happens."

"The fact that 'Deadpool' came out in February and did as well as it did, and you are seeing similarly the summer [movie season] start earlier in March, and movies succeed in October and so the date to us doesn't mean as much as it used to," he continued. "I think the studio feels the same way. We just want to make the best movie possible and Deadpool will find an audience, we feel at this point."

"Deadpool 2" is targeted for release in 2018, and will see the return of Ryan Reynolds, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand and Karan Soni, along with newcomer Zazie Beetz as Domino.
