UPDATE 2/22/2017 1 AM ET: Ryan Reynolds took to Twitter on Wednesday evening to comment on Collider's report, stating that ".@RhettReese and Paul Wernick are still very much writing the screenplay. They're the heartbeat of the whole operation." This doesn't necessarily confirm or deny that Drew Goddard has worked on the screenplay at some point, but does make it clear that Reese and Wernick as still active contributors to the film.

After dominating the box office last year, "Deadpool" has proven itself to be a vital part of Fox's "X-Men" universe. While there was a minor setback on the sequel earlier this year when original director Tim Miller departed the project, the studio was quickly able to enlist a capable replacement: "John Wick" co-director David Leitch. Now, a recent report from Collider suggests the studio has added yet another impressive member to its roster. Reportedly, "The Martian" scribe Drew Goddard is working on the script for "Deadpool 2."

According to the report, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick -- who wrote the first film -- did work on the sequel for a time. Though it's unclear how far they got in the script, the two are no longer working on it. Goddard is said to be working on the story with "Deadpool" himself Ryan Reynolds.

In recent months, both Reese and Wernick have talked about their plans for the sequel, indicating that they'd at least gotten to the core of the story they were hoping to tell. Whether or not any of that will remain when Goddard takes over is yet to be seen.

This is an interesting turn for Goddard, who left Marvel's "Daredevil" Netflix series to direct a "Sinister Six" film for Sony. Although he is no longer the showrunner, Goddard did write the first two episodes of "Daredevil" season one and still serves as a producer on both "Daredevil" and "The Defenders." Goddard went on to write "The Martian," earning him an Oscar along the way.

Directed by David Leitch (“John Wick”), the “Deadpool” sequel will once again star Ryan Reynolds, joined (so far) by Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Karan Soni as Dopinder and, presumably, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus. The film is targeted for release on Jan. 2, 2018.
