SPOILER WARNING: This article contains spoilers for “Star Wars” #24, which is on sale now.
Okay Star Wars fans, it looks like the time has officially come to stop automatically dismissing every single stormtrooper you see in a story. The reputation that stormtroopers have earned as poor shots and even poorer opponents gets a major overhaul in “Star Wars” #24 from Jason Aaron and Jorge Molina. In the issue, the deadly competent squad of stormtroopers introduced in “Star Wars” #21 finally clashes with the heroes of the Rebellion — and it ain’t pretty.
The arc currently unfolding in “Star Wars” began with Rebel team hijacking an Imperial Star Destroyer. But it turns out pulling off that seemingly impossible feat wasn’t the hard part; the real hard part is holding on to that stolen Star Destroyer in the face of Scar Squadron — a task force of specialized and highly trained stormtroopers.
The issue starts with the Rebels split up; Sana and Luke are searching for a missing maintenance crew below deck, Han and Leia are piloting the ship on the bridge, and Chewie and the droids are trying to repair the hyperdrive in the engine room. Unbeknownst to Luke and Sana, that missing maintenance crew is floating lifeless outside. And before they can discover that, the fireworks start.
Before anyone can react, Scar Squadron launches a multi-pronged attack on the Rebels. Zuke launches a projectile into the engine room; Sergeant Kreel separates Luke and Sana, leaving Sana at the mercy of Cav and Mic; and Misty, Aero and Shrap take the bridge before the smoke can clear.
Knocked off balance, the Rebels fight to regain the upper hand. Leia takes aim, Luke draws his lightsaber against Kreel, and Chewbacca leaps at the massive Zuke. Separated from Luke and pinned by blaster fire against an airlock, the Rebel soldiers make an extreme decision: one opens the airlock after the rest of thegrunts get their oxygen masks on, sucking all of them and the stormtroopers into space.
Meanwhile, Sana’s ex-search party partner finds out that there are stormtroopers that know how to use a lightsaber.
Back out in space, Cav and Mic prove that they don’t need gravity to be dangerous as they fight their way through the Rebel troopers.
Han and Leia manage to keep control of the bridge long enough to ram their stolen Star Destroyer through an Imperial blockade, scoring a small victory. But Luke and Chewie still remain locked in a death match against Kreel and Zuke — easily the longest any stormtroopers have lasted against the Wookiee. And things are about to go from bad to worse, because Scar Squadron’s boss is on the way. And who’s their boss? Well, he’s got a custom TIE fighter that easily cuts through a group of X-wings.
Considering all the mayhem brought about the Star Destroyer Harbinger by Scar Squadron, it’s no wonder this issue started off with Sana Starros introducing another variation on “Star Wars'” most prominent catch phrase.
Yeah, Sana, we’ve got a dopo me goola about all this too.
“Star Wars” #25 will arrive in stores on November 23.
