‘D&D’ Movie Aims For ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Meets ‘Lord of the Rings’

Warner Bros.’ “Dungeons & Dragons” live-action movie may not be the straightforward fantasy-adventure some game enthusiasts were expecting.

“This new ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ will be a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’-tone movie in a Tolkien-like universe,” producer Roy Lee tells Collider. “Because when you think of all the ‘Hobbit’ movies and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ they have an earnestness to them, and to see something fun, a ‘Raiders’ romp inside that world, I feel is something the audience has not seen before.”

Of course, after 2000’s “Dungeons & Dragons” and two direct-to-DVD sequel, most fans will probably be happy if the new film comes close to “‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ meets ‘The Lord of the Rings.'”

It’s been nearly three years since Warner Bros. acquired the film rights to the venerable role-playing game and tapped David Leslie Johnson (“Wrath of the Titans”) to write, but Roy is confident the studio is keen to mine the property for a franchise.

“I think it will really be moving forward quickly, and I don’t anticipate it not getting greenlit this year, mostly because Warner Bros. has DC now, and LEGO, and the ‘Harry Potter’ universe that’s being cultivated as their franchises,” he said. “I believe they see ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ as something that could be cultivated as a multi-universe movie where there will be spinoffs from the first movie being in ‘Forgotten Realms’ and subsequent movies being in different worlds.”
