Bruce Wayne’s return may have been prophesied for a while now, but the question of how that return would effect current Dark Knight Dick Grayson remained in doubt…until now. As released this morning via DC’s The Source blog and the New York Post, Grayson will retain the costume in a select number of Batman titles while Wayne takes up his new costume in “Batman Inc.” and other series.
“Bruce Wayne realizes that he can’t just be the grim avenger he was before,” DC co-publisher Dan DiDio told the Post. “He wants to be more aggressive in his reach, and realizes the change that Batman as a symbol can effect around the world.”
Grayson’s adventures will continue in Tony Daniel’s “Batman,” Scott Snyder and Jock’s “Detective Comics” and Peter Tomasi and Pat Gleason’s “Batman & Robin” while Bruce Wayne continues his mission to spread Batman’s influence across the world in David Finch’s “Batman: The Dark Knight” and Bat-Universe mastermind Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette’s “Batman Inc.” which will feature a number of team-up stories – including one with Catwoman as teaser art from the series (at right) shows.
“So aside from the new interaction between the two Batmen, there’s the interesting relationship between Bruce Wayne and his son,” DiDio continued in the paper. “Grayson’s role really is the protector of Gotham City. But we thought it only made sense for Bruce Wayne, a billionaire, to take a more global view.”
Editor Mike Marts added to the Source: “Just as readers were getting comfortable with the idea of former sidekick Dick Grayson playing the role of Batman, along comes Bruce Wayne’s triumphant return to the Cape and Cowl. Is Gotham City ready for two Batmen? Is the world? And who’s to say the fun will end there?”
