Already poised to be one of DC Comics' quirkier superhero teams, The Terrifics is about to get even more offbeat with an unexpected addition.

Newly released art (below) for the upcoming series by Jeff Lemire, Ivan Reis and Evan Shaner depicts the established Terrifics -- Mister Terrific, Plastic Man, Phantom Girl and Metamorpho -- joined by Tom Strong and his family: wife Dhalua, daughter Tesla and their allies, the steam-powered robot Pneuman and the genius gorilla King Solomon.

No details were provided, but more information will undoubtedly be revealed this weekend during New York Comic Con.

Announced in July as part of DC's upcoming Dark Matter line, which has since been rebranded as "The New Age of DC Heroes," The Terrifics seemed positioned to be the publisher's answer to Marvel's Fantastic Four. However, the addition of Tom Strong and his family would seem dramatically expand the possibilities.

Created in 1999 by writer Alan Moore and artist Chris Sprouse for Moore's Wildstorm imprint America's Best Comics, Tom Strong is a genius "science hero" who possesses enhanced strength and longevity. Living with his wife and daughter in the technologically advanced Millennium City, Tom -- along with his family and allies -- fights crime and goes on adventures, in the pulp tradition.
