Warner Bros. plans on hitting the road with Dax Shepard for CHiPs.
Deadline reports the studio has hired the Parenthood actor to write, direct and star in the big-screen adaptation as as Officer Jon Baker. Michael Pena will fill the role of Baker’s partner Frank “Ponch” Poncherello.
CHiPs aired for six seasons, from 1977 to 1983, on NBC, and starred Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada as motorcycle police officers for the California Highway Patrol. The original series mixed melodrama and comedy, but the film is said to be more of a straightforward action/buddy-cop story in the vein of Lethal Weapon.
Shepard looks to be a solid choice for the film. Not only is he a pro motorcycle and race car driver, but he wrote, co-directed, starred in and co-edited the 2012 film Hit and Run, which he made with his friends and wife Kristen Bell for $2 million.
