Warner Bros.' live-action Tarzan film seemed like it was going places, but a new report claims it's dead in the water. The movie, which was going to be directed by Harry Potter helmer David Yates, was looking to cast people like Alexander Skarsgard as Tarzan and Jessica Chastain as Jane.

Deadline contends Tarzan's high budget led to its downfall, with the studio shutting down all plans to make the film in 2013 and even closing the production offices. It was originally belied that Tarzan would start shooting over the summer. But that doesn't mean the movie will be dead forever.

According to the report, this Tarzan project has been near and dear to Warner Bros.' heart for a while, and the studio has been trying to get it made for years. They're going to give it another go in 2014, with the plan still to have Yates direct. Another problem could have been casting and timing, as the studio reportedly wanted Jamie Foxx to play Tarzan's third lead. That might be the "ex-mercenary who helps Tarzan save the Congo from a vicious warlord" role that Samuel L. Jackson was previously rumored for.

The consensus seems to be that Tarzan will only move forward if its budget drops significantly. According to an earlier report, Tarzan will center on John Clayton III, the famous “ape man” Tarzan, years after he’s re-assimilated into English society. Asked by Queen Victoria to investigate “the goings-on in the Congo,” he teams with a former mercenary named George Washington Williams to save the country from a warlord who controls a massive diamond mine.
