He may have been big in Germany, but David Hasselhoff has now gone galactic.
The 1980s TV icon, best known for his starring roles on “Knight Rider” and “Baywatch,” had a second career as a European pop star in the latter part of that decade. But now he’s made a splash with “Guardians Inferno,” a tongue-in-cheek disco number that closes out the soundtrack for Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”
The brainchild of writer/director James Gunn and score composer Tyler Bates, the song parodies Meco’s disco “Star Wars” theme, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1977, whereas John Williams’ actual iconic theme only climbed as high as No. 10.
The Hoff doesn’t sing, but raps over a 4/4 backbeat, and a wall of cheesy strings, triumphant horns and wah-wah guitars. The silly rhymes tell story of the film, and ends with Hasselhoff intoning “We are Groot.” Gunn told Rolling Stone he’s especially “proud of a line that rhymes ‘procyon lotor’ – i.e., ‘racoon,’ as in Bradley Cooper’s Rocket – with “motor.”
Gunn said he asked Hasselhoff to contribute to the soundtrack because the actor is supposed to be one of Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) biggest childhood heroes. Coincidentally (or not), Hasselhoff’s biggest hit was a was a cover of Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling,” which featured in the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” soundtrack.
He also explained that having a bigger budget allowed him to go after bigger numbers, which enabled him to land George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord,” ELO’s “Mr. Blue Sky” and Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain,” among others.
This isn’t Hasselhoff’s first foray into soundtrack work: In 2015, he provided the ’80s pastiche “True Survivor” for the soundtrack of Kickstarter sensation “Kung Fury”
