The second trailer for the upcoming X-Men film Dark Phoenix has been released. The trailer, which was unveiled during Jessica Chastain's guest appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, offers a few more clues about what exactly fans can expect from director Simon Kinberg's second stab at adapting Marvel's "Dark Phoenix Saga" for the big screen.

The trailer's debut comes just a day after a new poster for the film was released. That poster depicted Sophie Turner's Jean Grey divided into two beings: the mutant psychic known for leading the X-Men in the comics and her villainous, Phoenix Force-imbued counterpart, the Dark Phoenix. Much like the first trailer, the poster hints at battle lines being drawn between the X-Men and Magneto's band of more revolutionary-minded mutants.

Though the footage is short, fans get to witness the Phoenix Force chose Jean Grey as its new host, with the cosmic power surging into her body. "You will possess the very power of a god," Chastain says. The biggest scene takes place between Jean, Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender), with Jean using her newfound abilities to freeze Magneto in place while she crushes his skull inside his helmet.

Dark Phoenix is an adaptation of the X-Men arc by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum and John Byrne. The Marvel event ran from 1976 to 1977 and told the story of how Jean Grey was first infected with the Phoenix Force, a vast, cosmic power that often takes on the form of a fiery bird, only to sacrifice herself in the end.

This is not the first time the arc has been adapted for film. Kinberg also wrote the critically lambasted X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), which was directed by Brett Ratner. This time around, Dark Phoenix is written and directed by Kinberg.

Written and directed by X-franchise veteran Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film is scheduled to be released on June 7.
