Along with next August's New Mutants, Dark Phoenix is one of the final films produced by Fox before the studio's acquisition by Disney. Dark Phoenix will likely be the first X-Men film distributed by Disney after the acquisition finalizes in early 2019.

While the franchise is not expected to continue in its current incarnation, filmmaker Simon Kinberg has claimed that the upcoming sequel marks a new direction for the cinematic property in terms of tone that he hopes continues in the future.
Written and directed by franchise veteran Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film opens on June 7, 2019.
