Netflix is developing a 10-episode prequel to Jim Henson’s 1982 fantasy classic The Dark Crystal.
The announcement of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance was accompanied by a one-minute teaser in which Henson, who died in 1990, relates his vision for the world of The Dark Crystal.
While there’s no footage from the prequel, fans do get a few glimpses of the state-of-the-art animatronics Jim Henson’s Creature Shop will employ to bring the Skeksis, the Mystics, the Gelflings and all the other creatures from the land of Thra to life again. The series will also feature the work of Brian Froud, the conceptual designer on the original film.
According to the announcement, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all-new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.”
The series will be directed by Louis Leterrier, whose credits include Now You See Me and The Incredible Hulk. He will also serve as executive producer, alongside Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford. The writing will be led by co-executive producers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (Life in a Year), and Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost, The 100).
