Last fall, Titan Comics announced an upcoming revival of British sci-fi hero Dan Dare, in a new Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future comics series. Many of the details, including the creative team, remained unannounced, but CBR can now fill in a lot of the blanks.

Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future will be written by acclaimed veteran writer Peter Milligan and illustrated by comics newcomer Alberto Fouche. The series is set to debut Oct. 11, and the first issue will feature a cover by ODY-C and Black Bolt artist Christian Ward.

Milligan is well-known to comic book fans for his celebrated work on Vertigo series including Shade, the Changing Man, Enigma, Human Target and a four-year run on Hellblazer. He famously teamed with artist Mike Allred for a subversive take on Marvel's X-Force, which subsequently transformed to X-Statix, and his more recent work includes The Discipline at Image Comics. October also marks the debut of Kid Lobotomy, the launch title of IDW Publishing's Shelly Bond-led Black Crown imprint, written by Milligan and illustrated by Tess Fowler.

Dan Dare was created by Frank Hampson, and first appeared in 1950's inaugural issue of British comic magazine Eagle. The character -- Colonel Daniel McGregor Dare -- is known for (space) piloting skills and an upstanding moral code, effectively the British equivalent of Buck Rogers.

Like most pulp characters of the era, Dan Dare has appeared in multiple incarnations over the decades, including a radio serial and video games (plus mentions in songs by David Bowie and Elton John). The character had a stint in 2000 AD, and was most recently seen in comics in Virgin Comics' 2007 series by Garth Ennis and Gary Erskine. There's something of a history of iconic Vertigo creators taking on Dan Dare -- along with Milligan and Ennis, Grant Morrison wrote the Dare series in 1990, illustrated by Rian Hughes.

Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future appears to be closer to the spirit of the originals than other modern takes, and the status quo picks up with peace in the "Sol System." Here's Titan's official description of the series: "When an unknown alien vessel of biblical proportions arrives in the solar system and obliterates a moon of Saturn in a show of strength, Dare finds himself thrust back into a new adventure that threatens not just Earth – but all life in the entire universe!"

Along with Christian Ward, Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future #1 will also have covers by Fouche and a "retro variant" from prolific 2000 AD artist Chris Weston. Each can be viewed below, along with two pages of interior art.
