The Veronica Mars movie is headed to theaters in March, but it looks like fans of the cult favorite television show have some big news to celebrate in advance of its release -- according to a number of media outlets covering the TCA Press Tour (including Deadline), the CW has ordered a Veronica Mars digital spin-off series for its digital arm, CW Seed.

"The Veronica Mars movie got it going," said CW president Mark Pedowitz. "[Series creator] Rob Thomas is very excited about doing this at CW Seed."

Veronica Mars has experienced a huge resurgence of interest since its wildly successful Kickstarter campaign -- Thomas is already set to launch a series of novels based on the show -- though it's unknown as to what capacity the original Veronica Mars cast will be involved in the spinoff. Original series star Kristen Bell currently plays Jeannie van der Hooven in Showtime's "House of Lies," and more recently lent her voice to Disney's animated feature Frozen. It's currently a complete unknown whether Bell will be involved in the spin-off, though Pedowitz stated Thomas has plans for "potential people who could be involved" -- but nothing is set in stone.

Thomas also has a few other irons in the fire -- most notably his involvement in the adaptation of Chris Roberson and Mike Allred's Vertigo Comics series iZombie, which Pedowitz said was in the queue before the Veronica Mars spinoff.

The Veronica Mars movie debuts in theaters March 14, 2014.
